Must Have, Before Launch
Things that (according to Jonathan) have to be done before we start
inviting people we don't know to use the community site.
This list exists for two reasons: (1) setting expectations for
early visitors, (2) inspiring and coordinating the volunteers.
Let me know if I've left out something essential!
Completed items are dimmed out
-
JAR and volunteers to get familiar with how to make changes (cvs
from /usr/local/cvs/hive)
- Rewrite intro paragraph; purge the word 'enthusiast'
- On-page instructions for posting: what you can expect when you do
this; anticipate questions
such as how to add photos and determinations
- Instruct on how to see photo enlarged
- Fix terminology: "determination", "taxon"
(not "taxonomy" and "classification") etc.
- Upload some interesting content to act as beacon:
collar Andrea, Piotr, Gary, Bruce, Chris, Naomi, others
- Remove 'testing' items
- New logo
- Review everything
- Liberalize the robots.txt file so that search engines can find content
- Fix the 'contact us' link to direct questions to JAR, not the
6.171 team
- Work on 'active postings' sort order immediately following posting
- 'last reply' should be 'last posting' (first posting isn't a reply)
OK, you've been briefed - now try it out.
Nice To Have
Some or all of these things should be able to wait until after 'launch'.
- Static link to philosophy page to answer questions such as:
Who needs it? What is the competition?
- Less scrolling (one example: you need to scroll down to 'submit'
button in order to submit a posting)
- Better login logic (for people who chronically forget or lose
user names and passwords)
- Get rid of "/hive/" in the URL's
and fix ensuing 'no such file' bugs
- Set up forums for Philippine ant project, etc.
- In 'edit profile' percolate 'United States' to top of list
(because the ent club is based in the US)
- List of related / similar sites, with comments:
insects.org,
thaibugs.com,
Plonsky,
etc.
- More graceful treatment of bugs in user's HTML
- Try to lighten up on the long and forbidding 'terms and
conditions of use'
- Calendar main page should list next several events even if
they're not in the current month
- 'Recent calendar events' should omit events that have passed;
would be nice if it also gave dates
- Bug: objects show up in the 'recent' lists even if they have
been 'archived'
Nits
- 'Archive' button next to specimen image is catastrophic,
and it changes the 'date collected' of the record
- In 'add classification' there's no way to add new taxa
- 'Reply to Your Posting' email should include name of replier
- 'New User' should be 'Visitor' or 'Anonymous Visitor'
- Be clear about photo permissions and IP generally:
'By uploading I assert that I have the right to do so.'
- A standard place to put photo credits?
- A place to put photo details:
camera, lens, film, lighting, staging, etc.
- Attachments (audio, video, PDF, presentations)
- Taxonomies - documented upload format, browsing, possible
internal changes for scalability; contact Tree of Life project
again about automated access to TOL
- Book recommendations should name the recommender more prominently
- Check site against guidelines for accessibility
- Porn and spam exclusion?
- Allow <a href="mailto:...">...</a> in user HTML
